Installing a snow fence?
Even under extreme weather conditions, a properly installed fence will be effective – just follow these recommendations
Your next fence should be able to withstand all types of weather, including sunny days, rainy days, or even snowy days.
When you deal with drifting snow constantly, it is only natural to expect your project to keep its shape and tension even after a snow drift.

While it is nearly impossible to prevent snow (winter is near, after all!), you can improve the performance of your fence if you take into consideration a few recommendations for your next installation.
Paying attention to these small details will improve the safety conditions for your livestock, protect them from predators and above all, your fence will maintain its shape, tension and form for as long as possible with the least amount of maintenance.
Secure your fence posts
A strong fence starts with a strong foundation – if you want your installation to go smoothly, you should pay attention to your posts first.

A windward fence should be able to resist snow as well, and it all starts with posts.
Generally, at least one third of the total length of the post should be buried underground. Depending on weather and soil conditions, this can change, causing at least one half of the post to be underground.
For extreme weather conditions, the application of concrete at the base of the post will greatly improve its stability. A few recommendations whether you use a post driver or an auger:
- Add a slope of concrete above ground, down and away from the post, to allow easy drainage.
- Add a 6″ layer of concrete or gravel for stability of your finished product
- Design your fence post hole in a bell shape to ensure greater hold in soil
Inspect Constantly
Building and erecting a fence is not enough: Inspection and maintenance should be applied constantly in order to keep it working properly.

Inspection is a great way to collect valuable information about your fence: highly visible signs of needed maintenance include leaning or broken posts, while other smaller signs include rust, cuts and scrapes to the fence.
