Wind resistant fence design
Key points to consider
A fence is not only a boundary marker around your property: It is also an investment in security and the safety of your property.
In windy areas, however, a fence can quickly become a problem if it is not properly installed, requiring maintenance, repair or even replacement.

Thus, investing in fence style that offers wind resistance isn’t just about durability; it’s about securing your property and achieving long-term peace of mind.
Start with a strong foundation
The structural integrity of your fence begins with a foundation solid enough to resist strong winds: Properly installed posts. Anchoring fence posts is then the first step to guarantee a fence that will withstand high winds. Depending on budget or preference of a project, metal, wood or concrete posts can be used with a woven wire fence or wire panel.
As a general rule, at least one third or up to half of the post should be buried underground to offer stability, depending on the height of the fence and requirements of a particular project. These posts can be reinforced by pouring concrete around them to maximize resistance.

With STAY-TUFF wires and fences, posts can be distributed and installed up to 25′ apart, thanks to the high carbon content of wires. However, depending on wind intensity and soil conditions, this can change.
Choose the right material
When wind hits, the quality of materials matters. Pressure-treated wood offers good strength, but metal posts (steel or aluminum) provide superior durability and resistance to rot, which can weaken timber posts at the ground level.
For ultimate stability in high-wind zones, concrete posts offer exceptional mass and rigidity.
Allowing wind to pass is crucial for the stability of the fence structure. Choices like slatted fencing, solid panels or vinyl fences are discouraged in the context of windy areas, while wire fences with knots that prevent sagging and that allow high winds to pass are a much favored choice.
Consider installation and maintenance
Lastly, installation and maintenance need to be taken into account when installing a fence project in any outdoor space in wind prone areas.

The right foundations and materials are vital for a successful project, but maintenance and constant inspections will also contribute to a fence resisting wind.
Broken panels, damaged wires, rotten or broken posts: All these detrimental to fences, and should be repaired or replaced immediately.
